A CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the two to three inch chip within a computer that carries out the instructions of a computer program by performing the basic arithmetical, logical, and input/output operations of the system. Essentially it is the brains of the system that performs arithmetic and logical operations, and extracts instructions from memory and decodes and executes them when necessary.
A computer can have more than one CPU, which is called multiprocessing. All modern CPUs are microprocessors, meaning that it is only on a single chip. Some integrated circuits (ICs) can contain multiple CPUs on a single chip, which are called multi-core processors.
They are all still relatively the same size, but more current processors have removed the many pins that go into the CPU socket. Current processors now have small bumps underneath the CPU where the pins used to be, eliminating the problem of bending or braking the pins and making it useless. Locating the CPU socket has been fairly easy since it is usually the exact same size as the CPU with a lever to press and lock the CPU into place.
