Italian (I): Una Fata a Gardenia Translated: A Fairy From Gardenia Cinelume (C): An Unexpected Event Fox/4kids (F/4): It Feels like Magic Nickelodeon (N): N/A (See First Special) Comic: Volume 4
The two versions have different songs and footage for the theme song. C theme lasts 1:25 and F/4 lasts 1:00 apx. C uses some footage from the show and some unique images. F/4 uses scenes straight from the show that roughly correspond with the words of the song.
The I and C version has a title card with the name of the episode. This is cut in the Fox/4kids version.
For simplicity's sake, I'm dividing this episode into three parts: Starting adventure and getting bike; Meeting Stella and dealing with magic; Defeating Knut and going to Alfea. In this episode, F/4 modifies the episode so the first two parts are switched. Within these three parts, some of the scenes are switched around. To better illustrate this, I made a table of the main events of the episode broken into sections. Events that are mixed up are colored.
The first two thirds of the episode are mixed around, making the episode look like it takes place over the course of three days instead of two. From here on out, I will go in order of the C version and go into detail everything that happens.
In the original, we see Gardenia and settle over some buildings and it fades into a drawing of them. This part is kept in F/4 until the last second when the drawing part is cut. In the C version, we hear music while in F/4, there's different slightly more lively music playing and then we hear a voice over from an unseen Mr. Jenero calling out to Bloom as we pass the sign. Then, we see Bloom riding her bike to the park. Notice she's facing forward and not waving at all.
Right after the overlook of Gardenia, we're supposed to see a building become a drawing, pan out to show it on a bulletin board next to an amazing fairy picture. Then, we see Bloom's desk with her pencils and papers. We get a slight close up before we see Bloom's skirt and shoes and hear Kiko snoring. Notice the fairy book open next to the bed. This is important since in C, Bloom read the book that day BEFORE she even met Stella. In F/4, the scene is shown AFTER she met Stella and Vanessa comments that she hadn't read the book since she was little. This would imply that Bloom stopped believing in fairies after growing up. In C, she always believed as Vanessa asked her if she ever got tired of "these silly things" with Bloom annoyed, saying they aren't silly. I guess believing in fairies at 16 is too babyish for F/4, but they had to do something since this scene was switched in F/4.
This one gets complicated so I'll try to break it up. We see Bloom's clothes and Kiko and the Book. As we see them, Vanessa speaks. In C, she's telling Bloom to wake up. Bloom then sleepily asks for five more minutes. IN F/4, Vanessa comments on how Bloom hasn't read the book since she was little. Now it gets weird. In C, we see our first look at Bloom, who is asleep. Then Vanessa bends over her to tell her she's late. Bloom bolts up, exclaiming "School?!" and we see her jump out of bed. In F/4, we see Bloom while Vanessa (still unseen) says, "Rise and shine Princess". Interesting how she calls her that, given Bloom later finds out she's Princess of Domino. A hint F/4 created maybe? Now, instead of bending down, we see Vanessa in a different scene, commenting more about the book. This scene isn't used yet in C. Vanessa also picks up the book. We go back to C where Bloom jumps out of bed, appears washed up in a robe, pulling on her pants, and then tugging on her shirt while complaining about being late. IN F/4, we go back to Bloom's sleeping head and she bolts up. But Vanessa isn't in that scene at all! Actually, it looks like F/4 flipped the scene and erased Vanessa. Anyway, Bloom bolts up saying, "So it wasn't a dream!" Bloom then proceeds to shower and dress while explaining about Stella (someone's cousin visiting from far away). Vanessa also said she was still asleep. Notice that the book Vanessa picked up a minute ago is still on the floor as Bloom dresses. Interesting to note that F/4 didn't edit out Bloom's underwear and bra showing. Back to C, as Bloom's shirt comes on, she realizes it's Summer and tells Vanessa that the joke wasn't funny. We then see Vanessa's head from that scene F/4 used earlier. Vanessa laughs that Bloom fell for her joke. Bloom climbs back in bed while Vanessa comments on her sleeping habits and then about the book. The scene where Bloom goes back to bed was cut. Vanessa picks up the book, asking if she got tired of fairies and Bloom retorts they aren't silly. The part where Bloom sits up after going back to bed is also cut. We then see Vanessa put the book down, tell Bloom she can help her in the shop, and leave while Bloom groans. In F/4, Bloom asks Vanessa not to wake Stella as her shirt comes on. Her mom then appears in the scene where she puts the book down and leaves, telling her to come down for breakfast.
Bloom goes back to bed
Vanessa comments on the book while Bloom sits up in bed and says fairies aren't silly.
Mike is at the table reading a Newspaper that looks like it has Greek letters or something. In F/4, the paper looks like the Greek letters were airbrushed and replaced with squiggly lines.
In Bloom's room, there was a shirt on the floor just like the one she was wearing.
In C, Bloom complains about not wanting to work in the shop all summer and wanting to go on vacation with her friends. Her dad says when she's older and Bloom is annoyed since she's already 16. Her mom comes over and mentions a present. Excited, Bloom thanks them and runs out to see it. In F/4, Bloom is told to help clean out the garage, but Bloom claims to be busy. She asks about when she was younger and still into fairies. Mike remembers about it. The scene with Bloom as a kid is kept, overalls and all. It doesn't make sense since she just had an attitude face when Mike was talking about how she was pretending to be a fairy. Vanessa tells Mike to give her a break. Mike agrees if Bloom gets the groceries. Bloom happily agress and runs off.
This was cut since it wouldn't fit with F/4 recreation. Bloom gets her bike and hides her disappointment since she didn't get a scooter. Vanessa and Mike talk about it and go back inside.
In C, Bloom frets about how her parents would never let her have a scooter when Mitzi calls her over. She asks about Bloom's vacation and Bloom replies. Mitzi "offers" to send her a postcard from her vacation, then is rude to the guys delivering her scooter. She shows it off, Bloom politely leaves, drives off, and calls her a showoff. In F/4, Bloom wonders about her powers when Mitzi teases about Bloom's bike. Mitzi is meaner and scolds the scooter delivery guys. Bloom leaves and asks Kiko to remind her to turn Mitzi into a monkey if she has powers.
In this scene, it takes place right after leaving Mitzi, but in F/4, this was moved to the beginning. In C, she just rides off. In F/4, she's answering Mr. Jenero. Notice her lips don't seem to move. She's also not even waving or even look at anyone!
In C, this is after Bloom wakes up, but in F/4, this is at the beginning and after all this is when Bloom wakes up when C begins.
In C, Stella fights without speaking until she calls out her attack "Rising Sun". In F/4, she says "Back you" and then calls out her attack "Rising Sunburst". A rather needless change, but not a big deal. There's an added line in F/4 from Stella where Bloom talks to Kiko.
C Attack: Solar Wind F/4 Attack: Solar Wind Blast. Another needless change.
Stella threatens Knut and calls herself the Sun and Moon Fairy. F/4 has her insult him and says the power of Solaria will flatten him. Stella says Solaria differently in this episode. The pronunciation she usually used is also the same as the C version.
Knut says something while taking down Stella while in C, he just grunts. Bloom says "oh my goodness" while in F/4 she says "that's gotta hurt!"
In C, the ghouls appear on Stella. We first see her feet and slide up to see the rest of her. Then, we get a close up of a ghoul and then Knut takes the scepter from the ghoul. Stella is grunting, trying to break free. In F/4, we see Stella's head first and then the scene reverses from the C version where we go down to see her feet. She also threats Knut and he answers.
C: "Or else I'll-wait, what am I going to do?" F/4: "Come get me! Wait-did I just say that?"
In C, Knut first yells at the ghouls to attack Bloom. She yells "Get back" and creates a force field that destroys the ghouls. Knut looks surprised and Bloom is amazed at herself. Kiko gets up and does karate moves until a ghoul scares him. Bloom hits the ghoul with a stick and it blows up. We then see Bloom standing with Kiko. Knut comes behind her. Knut then grabs her by the arms and threatens her. Bloom cries out "Oh no!" and glows and lets out a burst of energy shaped like a dragon. Knut is knocked away. We then see Stella who exclaims "Wow! Powerful!" Bloom pants on the ground. Knut grunts. Stella gets up and grabs her scepter. She comes to see if Bloom is okay. Stella turns and attacks Knut. Ghouls come up, Bloom lets her know, Stella glows, spins the scepter, and blasts them. She turns it more and stops. Kiko mimics her. A ghoul chews Bloom's pants and she grunts as she shakes him off. Her pants tear and the ghoul takes the fragment. Knut disappears and calls Stella Blondie. Stella is relived they're gone, then faints. Her clothes reappear and Bloom remarks they better go home. Now for F/4: Instead of ordering the ghouls, Knut just yells. He also grabs Bloom first. Bloom yells "Let go!" Then she's standing where she just was and the Ghouls charge. She yells "Get back!" like in C. The ghouls are destroyed with the force field. She asks what happened while we see Kiko do karate. She hits a ghoul. Then Stella gets her scepter. She comments Bloom has "major Winx" and Bloom is confused. Knut is laughing while Stella insults, then attacks him. When Bloom's pants are bitten, she yells "get off" when it tears. Knut leaves while mentioning "Princess Stella". That messes stuff up a bit because this is the first time Stella meets him. Him saying her name would imply that they already met.
Knut is startled when he sees Bloom make that force field.
Bloom stands with stick after hitting the ghoul and Knut comes up behind her.
Right after Bloom releases the dragon burst, we see Stella on the ground exclaiming "Wow Powerful", Bloom panting, and then Knut grunting while reaching for the scepter.
Nothing changed, it just is supposed to take place after the fight. In F/4, it takes place after Bloom leaves Mitzi. I also notice Knut called the Trix "Highness" while in F/4, he refered to them as "your wickednesses".
Mike says "Hmm, I see" while twiddling his fingers.
Stella wakes up and asks them not to tell anyone when Mike wants to phone the hospital. In F/4, Mike wants to call Dr. Silverman when Stella pipes up with Good Morning. I guess F/4 wanted us to believe this happened over the course of 2 days rather than it all being the same day.
Mike wants to call the police now. F/4 still has him wanting to call Dr. Silverman.
The whole thing with Stella and Bloom meeting is similar, but obviously the versions say different stuff. F/4 keeps shoving "realm" down our throats.
When Knut speaks, Troll smells the fabric. He says, "find that girl" when we get a close up of Troll's face. In F/4, the troll says they're close while in C he says nothing.
Troll's head pulls back and we see the gate as he says "this way". Troll, Knut, and ghouls walk off and we pan to the right.
When Stella goes in Bloom's room, she's impressed and calls Bloom's drawings amazing. F/4 has Stella call it cool and talk about a "quick packing spell". Geez, that's so Mary Poppins! Cool idea, but I like the drawing comment better.
Bloom askes if Stella's world is like the one in the book and Stella says it kinda is but it's much nicer here. Bloom responds it's all point of view. F/4 has Bloom asks if she's like the girl in the book. Stella says kinda but remarks the book was written by humans. They're more fashionable and much cooler. Bloom is amazed she really does know magic. Dunno, F/4 kinda ruins it, doesn't it?
Stella says Bloom always had powers. She just didn't know and it's a question of concentration. In F/4, Stella mentions something her fairy Godmother used to say. Wait now, fairies have Fairy Godmothers?! Why?! What's the point, F/4?!
Stella brings out a Bottomless Postcared. It's called an Express Portal in F/4. I like Bottomless Postcard. It sounds more creative, but both names are good. Stella says "Magix" as she steps on while in F/4, she just says it's cool.
After troll lost the scent, we hear Mike say, "Ha! Fairies! It's totally ridiculous!" and they all run away. We see Vanessa's profile in the window and she says, "Mike, it's not ridiculous, it's true. Come on! Admit it! You and I both know that Stella is a real fairy, but you're afraid to believe it! Mike! If this is Bloom's true nature, who are we to stope her?" After the first sentence, we see Mike and Vanessa talking. One her last sentence, we see the portal and Bloom and Stella.
In C, the girls land, Stella shows Bloom the castle, Bloom frets about it, Stella tells her she has to leave the next morning. Bloom syas she'll sleep on it and the girls leave by jumping up. F/4 adds stuff from future episodes. Stella shows the Castle, Bloom asks what goes on there. WE now see clips from other episodes. We see girls enter the Alfea gates from episode 2. Then we see the dining hall. Stella talks all the while about people from all over the universe coming there. She mentions most are princesses like her and mentions pixies and gwillions. What are gwillions?! We then see Red Fountaing and the Prince Sky then the four guys from later in the episodes. She mentions that they're one enchanted forest away from Red Fountain. Okay, seriously! We then see Cloud Tower which ahs Stella says it is just down the lagoon. At least it's not "magical!". We see a clip from the third episode where we see Gryfin and the Trix. We then continue with the original clip when Bloom turns around, Stella syas he invted some of the "H and B boys over." Okay seriously?! Bloom is excited and they leave.
We miss just a close up of the door being banged. Not a big deal.
When the troll smashes the couch, the F/4 adds Vanessa saying, "That thing is repulsive" while in C, she says nothing. When it turns, she adds, "And angry too." Ahh the useless dialoge, Do we have to speak at all times, F/4?
When Stella raises her first to transform, she calls out "Solaria!" as the transformation music plays. In F/4, she calls out "Sun Power" as different music plays.
C: Stella calls out "Solaria" and her ring glows. We now see her right hand in a fist as light shines around her wrist and moves up her arm to form her arm bands. Then we see her eyes narrow. Then we see her left leg as light flows up it to form her boot. Then we see her body where light flows up to form her shorts and top. Then, she holds up her first two fingers of her left hand and turns twice to the left as her hair is styled in 2 pigtails. She then walks backward 3 steps with her right hand out and her left hand back as the circle behind her ripples twice. F/4: Stella calls out "Sun Power!" as her ring glows. Arm piece forms, eyes narrow, boot forms, shorts and top form (I noticed F/4 cut the bottom of Stella's breast off, rather understandable), holds 2 fingers up and turns. This is where it's weird. It's like she starts turning left, but then changes direction she turns right. F/4 seemed to mirror the last part! She skips backwards to the right and the rings start to shine and cut. Alright, WHY?! What is up with the changing it? I understand taking out the breast line, but switching the skipping steps?! Useless.
Right after transforming, we see Knut and then the troll steps up.
The troll speaks in F/4 after Stella kicks him, but it's silent in C. Also, Stella says they're outnumbered in C and Bloom says has has an idea and leads the ghouls away. F/4 has Stella tell Bloom to lead the ghouls away and Bloom is unsure. Stella calls out "Burning Sun" when the house blinks while in F/4, nothing. Bloom wonders what to do. F/4 has Bloom call them "poochies" and try treating them like dogs. What?! F/4, Bloom isn't stupid. She knows they're not dogs!
After Bloom wonders what to do, a pot drags past the ghouls toward Bloom. She picks it up but is confused nothing is there. WE see Kiko inside.
Bloom drops the pot, we hear Stella call out "Burning Sun" again.
After falling out the window, Stella sits up and Bloom calls out her name and comes over. Stella says, "Don't worry, I called the speacialists." Bloom asks "who?"
We see Mitzi lying on her couch watching TV. She says, "What a racket! I can't hear a thing. Huh!" Wish they kept it for the sake of finding out what bratty thing F/4 would have made her say.
These scenes are a bit weird so I'll list. First we have Knut squish gouls and Stella fall out the window. Then, we have the deleted C clip where Bloom goes over to Stella. Then the troll makes the doorway bigger and gets out. Then we have the deleted Mitzi clip. Now we break off. First C has the troll walks to the girls. They sit there wide eyed. Troll gets closer. The girls recoil and we pan up to see the troll when a rope coils around his neck. F/4 has the troll break through the doorway, go out, we see the girls, scared. Troll walks up, girls stare (I believe it is the same scene twice). Troll comes closer as Bloom says, "What'll we do?". They recoil as Sky says, "Princess Stella!" The rope goes around the neck as Sky continues "I hope your friend is the pretty one in the blue pants!" Brandom answers, "Yeah! And not the ugly one here at the end of the leash!"
When Stella and Bloom blast Knut, Stella says, "See? I told you you can do it!" Bloom says "Then I really am a fairy!" And my favorite Stella "Of course you are! I'm never wrong." I wish they kept that. Instead, we get Bloom yelling "Leave him alone!" and then Zap! Stella says "Awesome shot there Bloom!" Bloom says "It just happened" Stella said "Like I've said, youv'e got winx! Boo!"
When Knut gets up, everyone surrounds him. He says drats right before he leaves. F/4 has Knut and Stella speak where there was silence. Stella threatens a "stinkus removeus" spell. Lame! The stupid adding syllabuls to normal words to make a spell ting. Really dumb.
Stella introduces Bloom to the guys. F/4 has Brandon and Sky say hello before each is shown. In C, Stella adds that Brandon is Prince Sky's squire while F/4 doesn't. Dialogue Change: As the troll goes up, Bloom asks where they're taking him in F/4. They reply and leave with Sky saying he hopes to see Bloom at Alfea. In C, they say nothing except "see you later" when they leave.
In C, Bloom is going for sure and her parents are worried she'd encountere those creaturs again and they miss her. The whole protective parents thing. Mike surprises her by saying he'll come too. F/4 has them undecided yet. Bloom is packed in case. Mike wants to check out the school. He plays the clueless parents with the whole "how do we get there" thing. Stella mention that humans can't go, but rules are meant to be broken. F/4 has her say that humans can't use the portal, but her scepter can do it. She clals out "Sun Power".
Instead, we get a little music video. In this episode, Just Us Girls plays. The crystal ball comes up and Bloom says "Show me the future...future" and we see the music video. It shows clips from several episodes from all over season one.
